I currently whip out the crit calibrated stubby sawn off shotgun when large enemies such as death claws or sentry bots are in my face (when I say short range I mean shoooooort :p ) I mentioned I used combat rifle for all but short range. The damage increase compared with a combat just doesn't make up for the pathetic range, the immense range penalty, the high spread nor the low DPS. They are still good enough to get you through the game without the need for other guns if you want to play that way. Then it can do an excellent job at all ranges, VATS or not. IMO you would be better off with a combat rifle using a long light barrel, short stock and regular sized QE mag. The calibrated sawn off can be made at level 1 and will crit for 225 DAM without any buffs, and before counting location modifiers (headshots!)Īt lower levels that amount of damage is so ridiculous that it more than makes up for the need to stick it up the targets nose, but as you level up getting better weapons and perks it becomes more of a novelty. The only time shotguns become good is with specific legendaries OR a calibrated sawn off.
I've heard the sawed off with the Never Ending Legendary mod is quite broken too, but I still would think an explosive combat shotgun or a Two-Shot combat shotgun would top anything.In general shotguns suck*, with a double barrel being even worse than the combat one. Most weapon damage comes from your chosen perks also. The best Combat Shotgun you can find guaranteed is the Le Fusil Terribles (literally a shout out to the Terrible Shotgun from Fallout 3) but the best ultimate overall combat shotgun you can collect would either be one with the Two-Shot, Explosive, Instigating or Berserker Legendary Mod, dropped by Legendary Raiders and such, with a little bit of luck to get everything to click into place happily.
